Free fitness activities available
West Hawaii Community Health Center is offering free fitness activities and classes throughout the week to promote an active lifestyle that improves health, reduces the risk of chronic illness, controls weight and decreases stress.
“At West Hawaii Community Health Center we are committed to helping our community develop good, healthy habits that have long-reaching health benefits. Health and wellness initiatives like these fun, free well-being classes are an important part of treating the whole person and improving patient care,” said WHCHC CEO Richard Taaffe.
Pound — On Mondays, get a full body cardio-jam workout using weighted drum sticks. 5:30 p.m. Bring a yoga mat, water and wear exercise attire.
Hula for Health — This Tuesday hula class gets going at Hale Halawai County Pavilion, 75-5760 Alii Drive in Historic Kailua Village at 2:30 pm. Wear comfortable clothing.
Tai Chi — Gently exercise the body and the mind Thursday with slow motion, non-impact movements. Starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Kealakehe Health Center Pavilion. Bring water and wear light athletic or reef shoes.
West Hawaii Community Health Center’s Kealakehe location is at 74-5214 Keanalehu Drive and just up the hill from Kealakehe High School.

Celebrating Ohana
Neighborhood Place of Kona is collaborating again with Kona Commons Shopping Center to host Celebrating Ohana 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 5, inside the former Sports Authority location! Setup will be 1-5 p.m. May 4, and 8:30-9:30 a.m. the day of the event.
Last year, more than 600 people attended Celebrating Ohana.
Attractions will also include an inflatable maze, rock wall climber, face painters, and balloon artists.
Newbery Quiz Bowl
The 29th Annual Big Island Newbery Quiz Bowl will be held 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., April 20, at the Kamehameha School Keaau Campus.
Thirty-two teams from schools around the Big Island will be competing. Teams come from many types of schools. Each school sends a elementary or intermediate team of not more than five participants each.
Teams are made up of fourth- through seventh-graders who have read the selected American Library Association Newbery Medal winning books; award given for the best written children’s book for each year since 1922.
Teams compete answering questions pertaining to characters, plots, settings, etc. from these assigned books. Awards are given to the top five scoring teams.
The public is invited to attend and cheer on young readers.
Conference for Caregivers
TV broadcaster Emme Tomimbang, producer of “Emme’s Island Moments,” will be keynote speaker at the Hawaii Community Caregiver Network (HCCN) 2018 Conference for Caregivers on April 20. Tomimbang will share her personal story of how the stress of managing a broadcast career and being the unpaid family caregiver for her late husband took its toll on her own health as Emme the caregiver became Emme the care receiver.
The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Keauhou Resort &Spa, 78-128 Ehukai St., Kailua-Kona. Cost is $25 and includes validated parking, breakfast pastries and a buffet lunch.

So long, Cafe Pesto
Cafe Pesto in Kawaihae is closing its doors following three decades serving up local seafood, exotic pizzas, eclectic salads and Asian-inspired pastas and risottos.
The restaurant’s final day will be Saturday with service from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on first-come-first-serve basis. No reservations will be taken.
It will be open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today.
